An annual Parents vs a combined Bucks Bronco and Bucks Pony team.
15th September 2007
Today the youngsters took to the field as a complete unit to show their parents how to play the game. It was tight at times, with a number of contestable calls from both umpires, but in the end the pressure got to the old folks as they allowed a few too many walks and saw the game slip away.
It was a match played in high spirits, though plenty of aggression, as the Bucks shut out their parents, allowing only one run in the first two innings behind some accurate pitching and good ground fielding. The Bucks rallied in the bottom of the first to take the lead, but saw it slip away behind a long two-run shot, left-handed, from Mikey.
This was followed by a big 5-run fourth for the adults, but on the back of a drilled home run from James, who failed to star in the Home Run derby before the game, the Bucks got back. They were two runs behind going into the bottom of the sixth, the last inning, but drew walks and errors from the fielders as they loaded the bases and saw their side home, humiliating their elders on a lovely end-of-summer afternoon in Warley.
The kids were ecstatic with their achievements, having placed bets on the game months in advance, and can gain from this in the next few years. They will only get bigger and better and closer, and potentially threaten the Stags for their positions on the adult squads.
Brad won the Home Run derby earlier in the day, scoring two long balls against Kip's 'tater. Unfortunately the youngsters aren't yet developed enough to all be taking on the fences, but it'll come.
Final Score: Brentwood Bucks 10 Parents Irregular 9
- Mike 20th September 2008 For the second successive year the Brentwood Bucks showed their parents and elder siblings how the great game of baseball should be played as they ran out deserving winners. The match was a lot tighter than the game last time around with the youngsters pulling away early when the adults' pitchers struggled to find a fairly lenient strike zone and the patience at the plate that the Broncos and Ponies had shown throughout the season, with the former making it to the Final 4, was evident as they had changed their approach from the previous year, when they went down swinging with some regularity. The adults failed to get the ball past a fairly competent infield for most of the afternoon and, though batting left-handed, were left wanting for some inspiration from their bench. Calls were disputed from either side as tensions flared on empty stomachs (the barbeque wouldn't take place until after the match) but were both honest and even to both teams, though in hindsight some might have gone the other way. Trailing by a signifcant margin in the bottom of the sixth, the Brentwood Irregulars were down to their last out before they mounted the start of a comeback. And within a few minutes they'd roughed up the pitching and forced the older boys onto the mound to finish the job, though the victory was comprehensive and the after party went long into the night. - Mike
